The Masseria Pernice
A CHARMING STAY SURROUNDED BY NATURE
The Masseria Pernice, the historical residence of the Sallier the La Tour family, is located in the area of Monreale, nestled in the Valle dello Jato, among picturesque hills and vineyards. It was 20-years ago when landlords Domitilla and Filiberto Sallier de La Tour restored their home and opened it to their guests. All apartments overlook the traditional courtyard located at the centre of the mansion, and are adorned with cobblestone, bougainvilleas, jasmines, roses, and climbing geraniums. Once a granary and rooms for farmers helping the de La Tour family during the grape harvest, the lounge and apartments are now exquisitely furnished with antique family pieces, Sicilian ceramics, and period prints. The Masseria has preserved its traditional atmosphere, flavours and appeal, and is immersed in a splendid garden backed by hills covered in pine and eucalyptus trees.
Our history
The Pernice fiefdom, in the heart of the Jato valley, was part of the territories originally owned by the Jesuit body, acquired in the nineteenth century, as thanks for his services to Queen Maria Carolina, by Giuseppe Beccadelli of Bologna and Gravina, Marquis of Sambuca and II Principe di Camporeale, as well as founder of the neighboring village of San Giuseppe Jato, dedicated to the saint whose name it bore.
The attribution of the role of “masseria” occurs several years later by the X Prince of Camporeale, Pietro Paolo Beccadelli, who, with a great desire for agricultural renewal of the territory, transformed the company, originally cultivated almost entirely with sumac, in the winery, in the heart of which he builds the cellar “La Monaca”.
The cultivated area, given its size, required huge amounts of manpower, which is why the now uninhabited fief of Pernice was modernized and made it able to accommodate workers, owner and all the agricultural work material, known by the name precisely of “household goods”, of which the farm was originally the deposit.
The structure of the main house and the surrounding courtyard remained almost unchanged until the middle of the twentieth century: the upper floor was intended for family accommodation, the lower one for the stable, in one part, and for accommodation of the workers on the move for the annual harvest, on the other; later modernized by Pietro Paolo Sallier de La Tour.
The actual transformation into a private home, and many years later into an accommodation facility, is due to the current owners and hosts, Domitilla and Filiberto Sallier de La Tour, XIII Prince of Camporeale.
Domitilla and Filiberto, transferred to the ancient fiefdom as soon as they were married, created the living room, dining room and kitchen of their home from the stables that occupied the first floor, and in the turn of the 1900s, driven by the desire to expand the capacity hospital of Pernice, the current B and B, obtaining the main hall from the ancient granary of the masseria, and from the farmers’ lodgings and tool sheds the 4 apartments, intended for the reception of guests from all over the world: La casina della caccia, the house of ducks, the house of feathers and that of flowers.
